The Northwest Girls Collaborative Project (NWGCP) brings together organizations in Washington and Oregon that are committed to informing and motivating girls to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

THE NATIONAL GIRLS COLLABORATIVE PROJECT
This National Science Foundation funded project has been focused on helping similar regional collaboratives across the US and Puerto Rico get started. Within each of their regions, the leadership teams will conduct conferences and forums; provide mini-grants to project participants as well as an online Program Directory, and other resources in informal learning, evaluation and assessment. http://www.pugetsoundcenter.org/ngcp/.
NORTHWEST GIRLS COLLABORATIVE PROJECT IS EXPANDING
Part of this NGCP expansion includes expanding the current Northwest region to Alaska, Hawaii and Idaho! We hope to invite these new collaboratives officially into our region in January 2008! DIRECTORY – The online Program
Directory lists organizations and programs that focus on motivating girls to
pursue STEM careers. The purpose of the directory is to help organizations and
individuals network, share resources and collaborate on STEM-related projects
for girls. When you sign up for the Program Directory you will enter your
program description, resources available within your organization, program

WEBCASTS - The National
Girls Collaborative Project introduces Web casts! Hosted by the NGCP and the Educational
Development Center (EDC) the web casts will showcase the work of NGCP
participants, share promising practices in informal learning, including
resources, models and advice from related initiatives and organizations. Look
for our first web cast this April!

“LET’S HEAR IT FOR WOMEN’S BRAINPOWER” – Glamour Magazine, March 2007 issue contains an editorial feature on women in science. First stating some “infuriating stats” on gender inequity the article goes on to give kudos to several women scientists who have made notable scientific achievements. Glamour encouraged support of organizations like Association of Women in Science, L’Oreal and the Northwest Girls Collaborative Project!

Northwest Council for Computer Education
(NCCE), Technology in Education Conference, March 7-9, Spokane. NCCE brings
together educators, technology specialists, administrators, and the curious to
learn and share the most recent issues facing technology in education today. http://www.ncce.org
Allied Health Center of Excellence 3rd Annual Conference, April 12, 8:00-5:00, Bellevue Community College. The spring conference is Washington State’s gathering of allied health professionals, administrators, educators, business and industry leaders, and practitioners. http://www.wahott.com
Northwest Girls Coalition Conference, “What Works: Building a Community that Supports Girls”, May 4, Museum of Flight, Seattle. The goal of this conference is to share best practices in girl-serving programs and provide an opportunity for participants to engage in discussion on issues that are vital to meeting the needs of girls today. NWGC is partnering with Washington State Governor’s Juvenile Justice Advisory Committee for this event. http://www.nwgirlscoalition.org
RESOURCES
The Power of Partners DVD Resource: Research has indicated that supportive partners - such as parents, teachers and advisors, play a significant role in encouraging females to consider career fields where women are traditionally underrepresented, like information technology (IT). The DVD addresses ways that parents, teachers, and others can effectively support high school and college females to help them consider the full range of careers available to them. The DVD also includes a Facilitator's Guide with teaching materials and supplementary handouts for producing sessions for each group of supportive partners. http://www.witvideo.org.vt.edu
Expanding Your Horizons. Every year, over 5000 middle school girls in Washington State attend a day-long conference held on college campuses and consisting of hands-on activities led by local women working in science, technology, engineering, math and other non-traditional careers which are designed to nurture girls' interest in science and math courses. http://eyh.pugetsoundcenter.org
NEEDS
North City Elementary PTA is sponsoring Family Science Night, Thursday
March 29, 6-8:00 PM in Shoreline. They are looking for scientists from the
community who could provide an exhibit or interactive demonstration at the
event. Their goal is to spark the children’s interest in science with
“hands-on” activities and provide an informal learning opportunity
for the entire family. If you or someone you know would be interested in
