TechREACH
The mission of TechREACH is to increase middle school students’ interest in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) through hands-on high-quality curriculum, mentoring, and teacher professional development.
Current Projects:
- TechREACH Clubs
TechREACH Clubs is a program of the Puget Sound Center for Teaching, Learning and Technology (PSCTLT), which began with start-up funding from a Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation grant and additional funding from The Seattle Foundation. Launched in 2003, TechREACH Clubs originally targeted at-risk middle school girls, the group most likely to fall behind in the science, technology, engineering, and math areas. Over 700 Western Washington middle school girls participated in TechREACH Clubs the first four years. Grants from the National Science Foundation and Washington State University Center to Bridge the Digital Divide have enabled TechREACH Clubs to expand to the Pasco, Sunnyside and Granger areas of Eastern Washington and offer clubs to over 200 boys and girls.
- TechREACH Alliance Project
The TechREACH Alliance Project (TAP) is a partnership between the Puget Sound Center for Teaching, Learning and Technology (PSCTLT), Wilderness Technology Alliance and the TEConnections program to increase technology access and literacy in 10 underserved communities located in Eastern Washington and Western Washington. The TechREACH Alliance will provide technology literacy training and a refurbished computer with Internet access to people from low-income households via established partnerships with schools, DSHS, community colleges, and/or community centers. This project is funded by the Greater Everett Community Foundation through funding from the Verizon/MCI Merger Public Purpose Fund.
- TechCamps Washington
TechREACH TechCamps were offered to 200 middle school students in Eastern Washington during the summer of 2008. TechCamps provide students with one to two weeks of hands-on technology learning led by highly trained instructors. Teachers and staff are trained to deliver the curriculum to their students, or TechCamps instructors can lead workshops as well. TechCamps has a wide variety of curriculum options, such as Digital Photography, Web Site Development and Internet Use, 3-D Modeling, Animation, and more.
